I recently blogged about this, but a discussion over the weekend with my husband brought this to the forefront of my mind again.
My husband was speaking to someone within our local community who creates websites on the side. He recently created a website for a local business. My husband out of curiosity did a search for the site.
He typed in the specific domain name as a search but it did not bring up the site in the search results. In fact the only result which came close was the listing for the business on the Chamber of Commerce site. The only way to get to this website is by typing the url directly into the address bar.
So where’s the site? Well, there are a number of factors affecting this site but basically the site has not been indexed by the search engines and with the current design is unlikely to be indexed.
Before hiring a web designer you need to ask the designer if the sites they build can be indexed by the search engines. If the designer is unable to answer this question or doesn’t understand the question, you need to find another designer. For the most part, a site designed entirely in flash will not be able to be indexed. This is supposedly changing, but it is still hit and miss whether a flash site will be indexed.
WordPress sites out of the box are search engine friendly. There are also plugins (additional pieces of code) which help improve the search engine friendliness of WordPress.
